Congressional “Angels in Adoption” Recipient to Be Celebrated
NORTHBROOK, IL (October 26, 2016) — Gift of Adoption, a Northbrook-based national nonprofit and 2016 recipient of the Congressional Angels in Adoption Award, will be honored at a special BOOKS ‘n’ BOTTLES event on Sunday, November 13th. The event will be on the mezzanine at Sunset Foods, 1127 Church Street in Northbrook from 4-6 p.m.
As part of National Adoption Awareness Month, the BOOKS ‘n’ BOTTLES fundraiser will feature award-winning screenwriter Anne Heffron and her new memoir, “You Don’t Look Adopted”. In addition to conversation with the author and book signings, a wine tasting with refreshments will be served and raffles will be held. All proceeds will benefit the Gift of Adoption Fund whose mission is to fill the void that separates child from family – through adoption assistance grants that give vulnerable children a permanent home and the chance to thrive.
Five years after Anne Heffron’s mother died (before finishing the book that would end up favorably reviewed by The New Yorker and The New York Times), three years after getting divorced (for the second time), a year after getting fired (for throwing a pen and crying) and seven months after her daughter left for college (as a D1 athlete), she finally had to do what she’d been avoiding her whole life: tell her story. She packed up all her possessions, gave up her life in California, and headed to the place of her birth, New York City, to embark on Write or Die and find out who she really was. What happened in the end was nothing she ever could have predicted.
